OFFICER OF THE COURT

An officer of the court is any person who has an obligation to promote justice and uphold the law. Officers of the court are meant to promote the proper administration of justice. The term most frequently refers to judges, clerks, court personnel, and police officers. Attorneys are also officers of the court and owe the court a duty of candor and obedience to court rules. Thus, an attorney owes duties to a court separate from the duties owed to the attorney’s client and the attorney may be disciplined by a court in its judicial operations. [Legal Information Institute]
